If u like fantasy/comedy manga you should try reading Farytail
but if u like more of a serius smart manga I think u should try out Deat Note

Farytail is ongoing
Death Note is complete

And as some other before me mangas like
naruto, bleach, Kenichi History's Strongest Disciple and One Piece is realy good. Especially if u gonna start reading them from the beginning.

This is an old post, but maybe there's still some interest. Jademan has had a recent resurgence in popularity. A quick google will return a full run of recently scanned Jademan English comix from the 80s/90s. I personally recommend either Drunken Fist or Force of Buddha's Palm. I think Oriental Heroes was their biggest seller, but it kinda sucked in my book.

I'd recommend Bleach, if you like action, big swords, supernatural powers, etc. Also Dragon Ball, for it's classic.

Death note is also very good. It's bassicaly about two masterminds duel.

Elfen Lied is also good. It's about a horned girl, who escaped from the laboratory. Huge amount of blood, and also talking about feelings.

And also Berserk. Good Dark fantasy series.

Yu-Yu Hakusho is my absolute favorite series. Bleach is good, but it can get pretty long (still another favorite regardless).

There are so many, it all comes down to what genre you are into. Seeing as you aren't into the whole superhero thing, some of the more adult orientated series like Berserk, Hellsing, MDP Psycho, Akira, and Freesia to name a few. Most manga have high school students as the main characters, which then have special powers and thus become like a superhero comic. Naruto, Bleach, One Piece, Holyland, and Fairy Tail are still very good titles, fall into that teenage super powered dick measuring contest genre

Claymore has been one of my favorites, good character development and great story lines. If you like Vertigo style stuff, you may like it.

Also, not manga, but Bone is one of the best books ever in my opinion.

Not sure if you still need this, but aside from the main stream comics there are:
- Monster; psycholigal thriller, mixed with a bit of detective, drama and horror.
- 666 Satan; done by the twin of Naruto's creator, so the style is similair, but this one is finished at least.
- Gintama; comedy mixed with parody.
- HunterxHunter; something in a similair vain to mainstream manga's I guess.
- Ares; this one is a korean manwha, and the style takes some getting used, but the story is okay if you're into mercenary and war setting.

The genres are all different so just check out what you like more.

The best manga would have to be Monster by Naoki Urasawa. It actually pulls off horror in a medium that is hard to do. It's hard to make words or pictures scary but this manga pulls it off. Plus it has a really unique premise that you haven't seen a thousand times before.

this is the one that did it for me.

i still remember the first time i read Battle Angel Alita back in '98, because i remember my roommate was devastated when Aeris died in Final Fantasy 7. back then, i didn't understand how a PlayStation game, especially a Japanese RPG, could crush a grown man almost into tears. :?

until i read BAA#2

I'd recommend Trigun, definitely. It's the first manga I started out with and it's fantastic. It's not terribly long and drawn out, it's full of action and silliness and the classic manga styling, and the characters (especially Vash the Stampede) are lovable, quirky, and get into a lot of funny situations ending in AWESOME battles and duels. <3

I have to go with Dragon ball as well, not only because of the story, but the art evolution is mind blowing, specially the action scenes
