yes manga means comic in japanese, but now the word manga is use to describe that unique approach to story telling and art from Japan. that's why we don't call it comic, we call it manga even though we could just call it comic, because the gap is big enough to make it a whole thing on its own. also japanese people refer to western comic books as "comic books," they, too, make the distinction.

though technically, for it to be consider manga it does have to be made in japan, otherwise is just a comic with manga influence. but who knows, maybe in the future as the culture of manga grows in the west we'll start to see that exact same approach of manga from western authors, and maybe we will classify them as manga.

...so no, i dont consider Scott Pilgrim as manga, just a comic book with manga influence. Scot Pilgrim is awesome, by the way :-)

Nope. Although they do seem chibi-ish.

Obviously not. Manga is japanese comic, which is read from end to start and right to left and the draw style. Thats the reason why korean comic is called manhwa and chinese comic is called Manhua.

OK, this is rather old topic, but I felt an almost uncontrollable urge to reply to this. Actually I registered to this forum just to do so. So here’s my opinion.

First off, anyone who thinks tha manga must be made in Japan to be manga should google the term “OEL manga”. There are even such mangas that received manga awards.

Second, everyone thinking manga is an art-style should read more manga, and note that the art-style varies wildly. Manga is rather a narrative style. It’s not about how the drawings look, it’s about how much text there is. It’s about how fast action happens, it’s about the amount of panels per page, and how those panels are arranged, et cetera. A comic book of Japanese origin can very well not be manga.

I remember reading a really long article about Scott Pilgrim and why it’s a manga. Unfortunately it was in my native language, Portuguese, and I don’t have the time to translate it. (Also I read it a long time ago.) But it had a really good comparison: the same way a music genre originated in some country can be produced in other countries (rock originated in the USA, now it’s made all over the world), manga can be produced outside of Japan.

So, IMHO, Scott Pilgrim is most definitely a manga, and saying it isn’t only because it wasn’t made in Japan is akin to claiming The Who isn’t a rock band because it isn’t American.

Wanna-be? That doesn't seem quite fair.

I, personally, wouldn't call anything Manga unless it came outta Japan. Maybe that's reductive but, still.
