Thoughts on "X-Men Red" - Reactions, Predictions, Responses

Post by SprintShoes »

Hello all!

I can't help but feel like "X-Men: Red" hasn't received a lot of love (or, at the very least, it was met with some skepticism because of the initial line-up announcements). Now that we're 2 issues in, I'm wondering what your reactions have been.

Does it seem promising to you?

What do you make of how quickly it picked up, following "Phoenix: Resurrection?"

What are your thoughts on how Jean is written/portrayed?

Were the entry issues enough to get you interested in more?

Let's hear what you all think!

I honestly haven't even found out what the book is about. All I know is that Jean Grey came back (again), and then suddenly there's a team based on her hair colour - which I assume is made up of both Jean's, Hope and Mary Jane Watson.

I would prefer to wait until the end of the first arc to make up my mind, but so far the story feels rushed, maybe it will look better in its finished form

Yep. In the 5 issue series "Phoenix Resurrection - The Return of Jean Grey".

Spoiler: show
The Phoenix Force brought her back as its favourite host, but in the end Jean rejected the Phoenix to live out life as a "normal" mutant. So now she is back and gathering her own team to try to carry on Xavier's dream.

I feel it's a stretch. I mean I'm reading it but I think Marvel is just selling comics. There's a huge gap since she arrived, been found etc. after the limited series. I agree it's rushed and I can't say that I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually fails. Seriously, just put her in one of the regular books and everyone who's against the Grey family and all the enemies of Phoenix/Jean Grey will come back. Frankly, the Jean Grey 'reborn' is getting old. Why aren't other 'Marvel' characters being 'reborn'? Marvel is getting boring and its comic line pretty much reflects on what the organization itself seems to be going through imo.

Gotta hand it to Marvel through...she's been *officially* dead since early 2000s

Right? I was confident that Quesada was absolutely committed to keeping Jean dead. It felt like Bendis bringing the O5 from the past was an elegant workaround the Jean Grey moratorium. I'm wondering if the interest in Sophie Turner (whom I hate) is partially responsible, given her high-profile appearance as Jean in the live-action films.

Asrar's art seems like he's trying to make Jean look purposefully like Sophie--right down to the eyebrows and side-part.

I felt "Phoenix Resurrection" was underwhelming.

I feel, again, this is the Sophie Turner factor. She's going to be front and center for "Dark Phoenix," so the comics are a nice preamble to get new readers acquainted with this classic character. I read somewhere that the "gap" is going to be filled in during X-Men: Red Annual #1, so stick with it and you'll get the desired tete-a-tete deserving of this character.
