#100 Judge Dredd: The Judge Child Quest

Spoiler: show
Image

Judge Dredd’s own Star Wars, with a splash of Homer’s Odyssey. Dredd leads a crack team (including Judge Hershey in her debut appearance) in search of the mythical Judge Child, who will bring balance to the (police) force – the perfect setup to bob from outlandish situation to outlandish situation across the Cursed Earth and into space, taking in a first encounter with the fearsome Mean Machine Angel, a first look at the cowboy chic of Texas City, Dune-inspired Oracle Spice hallucinations and the brilliant, absurdly terrifying Jigsaw Disease that erases its sufferer Tetris-block by Tetris-block from existence.

The first long-form John Wagner and Alan Grant team-up, the pair would not only go on to craft more Judge Dredd mega-epics, but re-energised a cluttered and predictable era for Batman with a stripped-down and altogether darker run on Detective Comics, focusing on pulpy short-stories with fresh villains. This is where it all began though, taking Dredd outside his comfort zone into world of brilliantly surreal speculative escapism.

If Judge Child is Dredd’s answer to the precocious Anakin Skywalker, then Joe does what we all wished we could have done with the mystical runt…

#99 The Zero Hour

Spoiler: show
Image

Zero Hour was a 1994 comic book miniseries and crossover storyline that ran in DC Comics. In it, the one-time hero Hal Jordan, who had until then been a member of the intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps, mad with grief after the destruction of his home town of Coast City, and having obtained immense power as Parallax, attempted to destroy, and then remake, the DC Universe. The crossover involved almost every DC Universe monthly series published at the time. The issues of the series itself were numbered in reverse order, beginning with issue #4 and ending with #0 (i.e. 'counting down to zero'). The series was written and penciled by Dan Jurgens, with inks by Jerry Ordway.

Zero Hour was intended by DC as a belated follow-up to their landmark limited series Crisis on Infinite Earths, and was indeed subtitled "(A) Crisis in Time". It promised to do for the inconsistent future timelines of the DC Universe what Crisis had done for its parallel worlds: unify them into a new one.

The event served as an opportunity to reconcile some of the problems left unaddressed by Crisis and other problems that had been unintentionally caused by it. In particular, the revised characters of the post-Crisis universe had been rolled out gradually, with DC continuing to feature the old versions until the new versions were launched, some of them a year or several after the first wave of same (i.e. Superman: The Man of Steel and Batman: Year One). The character of Hawkman was one of the most problematic, since the revised version didn't first appear until 1989. This raised the question of what version of Hawkman had been seen since 1986. (He had been retconned to be both the Golden Age Hawkman and a Thanagarian spy.) The Legion of Super-Heroes faced similar problems with the elimination of Superboy from DC continuity. (Valor, aka Mon-El, a character with similar powers, had been recast to take his place as the Legion's inspiration and most powerful member.) These and other retcons were not always well received by readers and often introduced new problems.

The apparent villain of the story presented in the miniseries was a character named Extant (see also Hawk), who was using his temporal powers to unravel the DC Universe's timeline. In a confrontation with members of the Justice Society of America, Extant aged several of them (removing the effect that had kept these heroes of the 1940s vital into the 1990s), leaving them either feeble or dead. The true power behind the destruction of the universe - caused by temporal rifts of entropy - turned out to be former Green Lantern Hal Jordan, now calling himself "Parallax." Jordan had previously gone insane, and was now trying to remake the universe, undoing the events which had caused his breakdown and his own murderous actions following it. The collective efforts of the other superheroes managed to stop Jordan/Parallax from imposing his vision of a new universe, and the universe was recreated anew, albeit with subtle differences compared to the previous one. This 'blanking out/recreation' of the DC Universe was reflected in many of the tie-in issues; near the end of several of the tie-ins, the world began to disappear, and the last page of the book (or in some cases, several pages) had been left blank.

Hal Jordan, whose descent into villainhood outraged some fans, was later exonerated of his crimes in the 2004-2005 miniseries Green Lantern: Rebirth, which revealed that Parallax was a separate entity that had possessed Jordan, and was responsible for his murderous actions.

Eventually almost every person seemingly murdered by Hal Jordan/Parallax had returned from the dead or was shown to have somehow survived.

Alan Moore stripped fans of every preconceived notion that they had for the title, and drastically changed the mythology of Swamp Thing. #61 Starman: Grand Guignol

Spoiler: show
Image

Starman is the coming-of-age story of Jack Knight, who reluctantly assumes the mantle of heroism after his older brother David's death in battle. Jack, estranged from his family, agrees to use the energy-harnessing cosmic rod his father invented to be the original Starman in the 1940s to avenge his brother and protect his beloved Opal City (he eschews the garish costume of his predecessors, however, instead favoring a leather jacket and aviator goggles). In the skilled hands of Robinson and several talented artists, Starman is the rare superhero comic that favors character development and complex, extended story lines over slugfests. In this penultimate volume of a series collecting Starman's 80-issue run, Jack returns from an extended adventure in space to find Opal City menaced by evil forces led by the Shade. Jack prepares for an epic battle for the city that ends in triumph and tragedy. Robinson's ambitious approach can fall victim to overwrought narration and inflated dialogue, yet it is one of the more interesting comic-book renditions of the hero's journey.

#57 Church and State

Spoiler: show
Image

"High Society" saw Cerebus rise to the highest office in the city-state of Iest, and then fall back to his former status through an ill-advised war of conquest (as Cerebus grouches in an hilarious excerpt from his memoir show to the reader, one should be careful to invade only rich countries). He retires to a bar to write his book, and then, after a brief side-trip, he finds himself rather forcibly recruited by Mr. Weishaupt, the leader of the new 'United Feldwar States', to take up his old office as Prime Minister of Iest. He does not long remain there, however, due to the continuing conflict between Weishaupt and Bishop Powers of the Church of Tarim. So Cerebus is plucked from his secular office and elevated to the Papacy of the Western Church. Cerebus being Cerebus, he wastes no time in abusing his position for his own enrichment. Whereas "High Society" satirizes the political process and the manipulation of ordinary peole by politicians, "Church and State" is all about how clerics manipulate believers for personal gain (in this case, Cerebus telling the gullible multitude that Tarim will destroy the world unless they give him (in the person of Cerebus) enough gold coins).

On the personal side, Cerebus finds himself married to Red Sonja-takeoff Sophia after a night of drunken carousing, and proceeds to handle the situation with the maturity and sensitivity that readers will have come to expect from him. Sophia (globular cleavage ensconced in a chainmail bra) and her mother (who despises Cerebus) follow Cerebus from place to place, perhaps his primary supporting cast in this story. There is a brief appearance by Jaka, where, for perhaps the only point in the story, Cerebus demonstrates both genuine empathy and a willingness to put quieter pleasures ahead of love of money. Given the views that later made Sim a pariah in the comics industry, one always pays particular attention to his handling of female characters in his older stories. The sensitivity with which Jaka is depicted belies his later opinions.

#52 High Society

Spoiler: show
Image

A previous story in Cerebus (“Mind Games”) was the real demarcation between “Cerebus: silly satire book” and “Cerebus: more serious satire book,” but High Society was the most prominent storyline in establishing Cerebus as a more serious satire.

Our aardvark protagonist (for lack of a better descriptor for him) gets caught up in, well, high society. He is chosen to be a representative of the city-state of Palnu in the large city-state of Iest (where the comic would be set for the next six years or so). Much of the humor in the storyline is derived from Cerebus’ seeming obliviousness to the standard tropes of high society. In a lot of ways, it is similar to the great Jerzy Kosi?ski screenplay, Being There, only Cerebus is certainly not an innocent – he just views things in a more mercenary fashion than most, and fails to play political games, although he is certainly willing to try.

#51 The Surtur Saga

Spoiler: show
Image

All throughout the early issues of Walt Simonson’s run on Thor, we keep seeing someone (seemingly a blacksmith) forging a sword. Every time the sword is clanged on to continue the forging, we see a big “DOOM!” sound effect, showing that whatever this sword is, it is bad news for Thor. This continues for a number of issues until slowly we learn that it is the gigantic demon Surtur, and we see that he is raising an army of dark elves to attack Asgard.

Surtur shows up on Asgard, and so begins an amazingly epic battle that involves Earth AND Asgard, and ends up ultimately with Odin, Thor and Loki being forced to team-up against their common foe, Surtur. The defeat of Surtur would also result in a major status quo change in the Thor title. Simonson’s art was extremely powerful throughout the story, adding the dynamic grand quality that the epic battles required. And it’s impressive as all heck that Surtur’s attack doesn’t feel dragged out, due to a whole ton of other little attacks and obstacles in between.

#38 Miracleman: Olympus

Spoiler: show
Image

Olympus was the conclusion to Alan Moore’s tenure on Miracleman, and it completed the journey of Michael Moran (Miracleman) from his days as being a regular guy who happened to have fantastical powers to being, basically, a god on Earth. The path to this state came via a very bloody battle. Miracleman’s former sidekick, Kid Miracleman, had gone insane. Miracleman had defeated him by forcing him to turn back to his alter-ego, 13-year-old Johnny Bates. Johnny is an innocent, but he knows what he did as Kid Miracleman, so he sort of goes nuts.

Later on, Johnny is sexually assaulted at the group home he lived at – this causes him to snap and become Kid Miracleman again, and he goes on a bloody rampage through London. Miracleman and a group of aliens known as the Warpsmiths fight Kid Miracleman, and in the end, they succeed, but not before the whole world is informed by what Miracleman had striven to keep secret – that superheroes exist. Miracleman decides to basically impose his will on the world, and he slowly retreats from humanity (and his human wife that he was married to in his Michael Moran alter-ego) and as the story ends, he is living as a benevolent tyrant over the people of Earth.

#25 American Gothic

Spoiler: show
Image

American Gothic involves the introduction of John Constantine, and what that meant for Swamp Thing. Essentially, Cosntantine works as a sort of plot driver for the series of stories that make up “American Gothic.”

An evil South-American magic cult named the Brujeria are using the Crisis on Infinite Earths to help them take over the supernatural arena, and as part of their plot, they began having all sorts of evil events take place across America. Constantine manipulates Swamp Thing into taking down these threats.

Eventually, it all leads to basically one big ol’ fight between good and evil, and literally the Ultimate Darkness against the Ultimate Light. There are a series of artists at work during this storyline – the standard brilliance of Stephen Bissette and John Totleben, but also impressive work from Rick Veitch and Stan Woch on pencils.

Moore handled the slow build towards issue #50 about as well as any writer has ever handled a build to a “big” issue number – this is a storyline without being a strict storyline (for most of the story, at least). The final battle in #50, though, is given all the trappings you would expect from a “big” issue, with Moore playing with the vast history of DC Comics and their supernatural characters.

Moore stayed on the title for a little while longer (and did some excellent work), but in many ways, this was the pinnacle of his Swamp Thing run.

#12 Elektra

Spoiler: show
Image

Elektra was introduced in the first issue of Daredevil fully written by Frank Miller, as a former “love of Matt Murdock’s life” in college who, after her father (a Greek ambassador)’s assassination, moved away from New York only to return years later as an assassin herself.

Throughout much of the next 14 issues of Miller's run, Matt Murdock has to deal with Elektra’s return, both in his personal life as Matt Murdock (seeing his first real love again after years apart) and in his superhero life as Daredevil as Elektra was an assassin, and Daredevil doesn’t take kindly to assassins. This duality came into play pretty early on, as the pair alternated between teaming up and fighting each other.

Things changed, however, when Elektra was chosen personally by Wilson Fisk, the Kingpin of Crime, to become his chief assassin. Now Elektra and Matt were definitively at odds – although when she was assigned to murder Foggy Nelson’s, Matt’s law partner (and former college roommate), she could not go through with it when Foggy recognized her, showing that there was still some good in her. However, this epiphany did not last long, as her rival assassin, Bullseye, chose to prove himself to Kingpin by taking Elektra out, which led to one of the most iconic deaths in Marvel history.

Her death had a profound impact upon Matt, as did her later attempted resurrection by the ninja group, the Hand.

#10 Maus

Spoiler: show

The Pulitzer Prize-winning Maus tells the story of Vladek Spiegelman, a Jewish survivor of Hitler's Europe, and his son, a cartoonist coming to terms with his father's story. Maus approaches the unspeakable through the diminutive. Its form, the cartoon (the Nazis are cats, the Jews mice), shocks us out of any lingering sense of familiarity and succeeds in drawing us closer to the bleak heart of the Holocaust. Maus is a haunting tale within a tale. Vladek's harrowing story of survival is woven into the author's account of his tortured relationship with his aging father. Against the backdrop of guilt brought by survival, they stage a normal life of small arguments and unhappy visits. This astonishing retelling of our century's grisliest news is a story of survival, not only of Vladek but of the children who survive even the survivors. Maus studies the bloody pawprints of history and tracks its meaning for all of us.

#6 Kingdom Come

Spoiler: show
Image

Kingdom Come was part of DC Comics, Elsewords imprint, taking place approximately 20 years in the future. Painter Alex Ross had been looking for a new project. Already lending his realistic depiction of super heroes to an unsuspecting public in Marvel Comics' Marvels series, Ross was ready to bring his stylish brush over to the DC Universe and an eager readership awaited him. Alongside writer Mark Waid, Ross developed a complex future story for DC's icons in the 4 issue prestige format Kingdom Come. Under the limitless possibilities of the Elseworlds label, Ross and Waid crafted a tale of biblical proportions. Ross fleshed out a reality in which a reader could become fully immersed, creating new costumes for nearly every character, while attempting to stay true to each character's roots and personality. He also added dozens of characters of his own creation, including some designs from his childhood. It was a world as real and as fantastic as Ross' paintings themselves. In the DC Universe of the near future, Superman had retired from the life of fighting crime after the death of Lois Lane, and a new generation of super powered beings had risen to prominence. Without the guidance of their elders, the younger characters spent their days in a series of violent skirmishes rather than protecting the innocent. This was Ross and Waid's commentary on the modern state of violent anti-heroes prevalent in comics at the time, and the chaos of this dystopian future spoke to the readers.

Superman was coaxed back into action by Wonder Woman in order to rein in the new generation of heroes. Restored to his rightful role as the inspiration to millions, Superman and his fellow allies of the Justice League attempted to right the wrongs of the youth, until Superman's new battle escalated with the involvement of Lex Luthor and his mind - controlled puppet, the powerful Captain Marvel. In a final dramatic conflict, heroes battled anti-heroes even as a nuclear bomb killed the majority of the players on each side. Superman survived, however, and with the help of Wonder Woman and Batman, began to carve out a better, more peaceful world for the survivors to call home.

Alongside Superman, the series sees appearances from many of his most well-known allies and adversaries, albeit often in altered forms from conventional Superman continuity.

#4 Crisis on infinite Earths

Spoiler: show
Image

"Crisis On Infinite Earths" was DC Comics attempt to consolidate years of stories into a single shared universe. This series also brought in characters that DC Comics had acquired from other companies, such as Blue Beetle, Question, Captain Atom, Peacemaker and Nightshade (whom DC had purchased from Charlton Comics).

Comics didn't come any bigger than this. "Crisis on Infinite Earths" was a 12 issue maxi-series featuring nearly every character in DC comics' 50 year history, written and drawn by two of the industry's biggest name talents: Marv Wolfman and George Perez. It was a story that saw hundreds of heroes meet their deaths, worlds literally collide, and a bold streamlining of an entire line of super hero books. Not only the biggest event of the year, it would have ramifications for years to come, dividing DC's history into two halves dubbed Pre and Post Crisis.

The original idea behind Crisis was to create a more fixed universe for the heroes and villains of DC comics to occupy. Over the years, the formerly exciting idea of parallel universes was viewed by some as a convoluted mess. The heroes of the Justice League of America lived on Earth-1, while their older counterparts, the Justice Society of America, fought crime on Earth-2. Earth-3 housed the Crime Syndicate (evil versions of the JLA), while Earth Prime was a world where would-be heroes were relegated to the pages of comic books. There was an Earth for Captain Marvel's exploits, one for the Freedom Fighters and even one for the funny animal adventures of Captain Carrot, among many others.

The universes had grown out of control, and so Wolfman and Perez organized a grand scale team-up. Heroes from all time periods and all walks of life united under the powerful guidance of the Monitor. Many heroes sacrificed their lives in the ensuing battles. Finally, the Anti-Monitor was defeated - but at a great cost. In place of an infinite number of realities, only one remained: a new earth with an untold story and unlimited potential.

#3 The Dark Knight Returns

Spoiler: show
Image

The Dark Knight Returns is set ten years in an alternate future, with a worn and weary, aged Bruce Wayne. He numbs his conscience with alcohol to soothe the guilt he feels for his responsibility for the death of Jason Todd. Gotham City is under siege by a vicious criminal gang who call themselves the Mutants. Wayne unleashes his demons to confront the new threats to Gotham, and Batman is born again. Wayne finds himself struggling with the decline of his physique as he patrols and defends Gotham City. An inexperienced but courageous young girl named Carrie Kelly saves Batman´s life, and Wayne takes her in as a new Robin.

Batman is seen now as a menace to Gotham´s society and an anti-vigilantism wave is carried on from the government. Even Commissioner Gordon became a victim of both, criminals and government as well after he killed a teenager in self-defense. He is replaced by Ellen Yindel, a well known anti-vigilante cop. Batman found out how the mutants gained their power and their high-tech weaponry - discovering a net of corruption inside the U.S. Army. Defeating most of the mutants, Batman faces the leader, however his advanced age became a disadvantage for him as is eventually incapacitated by the mutant leader. Fortunately, Carrie Kelly appears and rescues Batman, getting him the Batmobile. After initially mistaking him for Dick Grayson, Batman confirms Kelly as the third Robin. After his recovery, Batman and Robin lure the Mutants to a sewer dump ("the pipe), where Batman defeats the Mutant leader (released from prison by Commissioner Gordon) in hand-to-hand combat, effectively breaking the gang.

During the time Batman was gone, the Joker entered a state of catatonia, being unable to find something to live for. After Batman´s reappearance, the Joker woke up and convinced Dr. Wolper that he has been rehabilitated. When Wolper takes the Joker to a talk show, he begins a killing spree releasing his joker venom to the audience and kills Wolper as well. Batman appears to stop him, however the Joker escapes due to the fact that Batman had to struggle with the police. Batman and Robin began to search for the Joker, after he killed a group of boy scouts and Robin avoids more deaths after the Joker planted a bomb in a roller coaster. Batman paralyzes the Joker and faces a dilemma on whether if he should kill him or not. The Joker laughs and calls Batman a coward, he then snaps his own neck to blame Batman for his death.

Superman is called by the U.S. government to stop Batman after he returns from a mission in South America. A lethal group known as the Sons of Batman have been using deadly methods against criminals. Batman and Robin decides to train them to use non-lethal methods. During this time, Oliver Queen, formerly known as the Green Arrow, warns Bruce about Superman and the government plans. Batman eventually faces off Superman in crime alley. After a rough battle, Bruce seemingly gains the upper hand thanks to his prior preparation and Oliver's kryptonite arrow. With Superman knocked out by the effect of the kryptonite, Wayne lays down a final monologue on Superman regarding how he is "the one man who beat him". After that, he tricks Superman into believing he suffered a heart attack in order to be able to escape the government. Clark goes to Bruce's funeral where he hears a heart beat inside the coffin, and winks at Carrie. He then realizes that Wayne faked his own death. After this event, Wayne begins a new life with his "army": Robin and Green Arrow.

The Dark Knight Returns helped to re-define Batman and portray the character as he was originally conceived during the 1930's.

#2 The Dark Phoenix Saga

Spoiler: show

The Dark Phoenix Saga was created because of the number of fans that loved the original Phoenix Saga. Marvel needed a way to bring the Phoenix back in a way like never before, so they decided to have the Phoenix come back to earth evil. They figured what better way to shock the readers than to have the once great and powerful balance maker turn evil and show its true colors. This idea resulted in the creation of the Dark Phoenix Saga.

#1 Watchmen

Spoiler: show
Image

Watchmen is Alan Moore's seminal comic series. It has been proclaimed one of the greatest literary works ever created and was the only comic book to be featured in Time Magazine's best 100 English-Language novels from 1923 to present.

"Who watches the Watchmen?" This slogan was everywhere: on the Universal Product Code box of direct market comics; adorning the bottoms of letter columns, and in provocative full page house ads. DC knew it had its hands on something truly great, and it wanted to whet the appetite of as many fans as it possibly could. When the first part of the 12 issue maxi series, "Watchmen" hit the stands, readers weren't quite sure what they were going to get. But when word of mouth began to spread about both the quality of Alan Moore's scripting and Dave Gibbons' detailed drawings, "Watchmen" became a fast seller and a fan favorite.

The writer had originally intended for his opus to chronicle the future of the fondly remembered heroes from the defunct publisher Charlton Comics. However, DC soon decided it had its own plans for those heroes and so Moore created new characters to give "Watchmen" its own distinctive universe. The story itself is a masterful example of comic book storytelling at its finest. As the obsessive Rorscharch began to investigate the murder of his old teammate the Comedian, a mysterious conspiracy unraveled that both saved the world and damned it. Filled with symbolism, foreshadowing and ahead-of -its-time characterization thanks to adult themes and sophisticated plotting, "Watchmen" elevated the super hero comic book into the realms of modern literature.

Is it known which issue of 2000 AD was Grant's first as Dredd co-writer? GCD only credits Grant as co-writer on the final five chapters.

Wagner and Grant only co-wrote four issues of Detective Comics, as they found they had too many differences of opinion when working on serious stories. 'Tec #587-597 were credited to the pair, who were afraid of breaking their contract with DC, but were solely written by Grant.

#98 Batman: First Tale of the Demon

By Denny O’Neil, Neal Adams, Bob Brown, Irv Novick and Dick Giordano

I read this one again recently and enjoyed it hugely, but it's a pity it wasn't all pencilled by Neal Adams. Novick and/or Giordano seem to have been under instructions to include swipes from Adams of Batman and Ra's at various points, and these stick out like a sore thumb.

O'Neil seems to have regarded the Batman who appeared in the JLA as apocryphal, as when he becomes aware of the threat to the world, he packs Robin off to college then heads off to confront Ra's alone, never considering getting on the batphone to round up Superman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the gang.

Strange that the cover of the first part of this said part 1 of 9, but the story ran to twelve issues. Perhaps they should have stuck to nine, as I thought most of the artwork on the issues not drawn by Alan Davis was pretty poor.

#91 Superman: The Man of Steel

It was the dawn of a new age for the Man of Steel that endures today.

Or it did until they rebooted everything.

Strange that they got Jerry Ordway to draw a new cover for the TPB. Were they not on speaking terms with Byrne at that point?

BTW - not sure if it's just my tablet or not, but I can't seem to open X-Men God Loves, Man Kills. :(

#88 Thor: The Ballad of Beta Ray Bill
It was the first work of Walt Simonson in the title, and the first appearance of Beta Ray Bill.

It was Simonson's first work as writer/artist on the title, but he had previously pencilled Thor #260-271 and Thor Annual #7.

#83 Elektra: Assassin
Why did she die, and how did she return?

The series doesn't address her death and (possible) resurrection. The Marvel Chronology Project places it before her first appearance in Daredevil #168.

#100 Judge Dredd: The Judge Child Quest

I downloaded all the 2000AD issues from 260-281 and extracted just the Judge Dredd pages with the the Judge Child and put them together if anyone wants them.

This image is by Kane not Starlin and has nothing to do with the Magus saga. The cover of Strange Tales #178 or Warlock #9 or 10 would be more appropriate.
