It's a shame that Dark Horse is loosing the rights, but everyone saw this coming. I wonder how much damage this will do to Dark Horse Comics.

Blue Sky Disney wrote:
Star Wars has a large, expansive universe beyond the films...

From television, games, toys, clothing, books to comics, the galaxy George Lucas created is vast and filled with boundless opportunities. If you love Star Wars and you collect comics, then you know that Dark Horse Comics has had the licensing rights to the Galaxy Far, Far Away for a long, long time. And they've done some very interesting, and quite high quality tales over the years.

One of the things that many people wondered after Disney bought Lucasfilm was how long will this relationship continue? Especially since the Mouse owns Marvel, the largest comics publisher in the world. Well, it appears we now have the answer. The Suits in the know have determined that no new contracts will be given to Dark Horse after the current ones expire. So all new projects after 2013 will be handled internally by Marvel.

It's not known yet if titles will be worked into the regular line up, or will Marvel create a special branch of the company that deals with Star Wars. It'll take a couple of years for the old deals to work there course, but the stories that Dark Horse have coming down the pipeline will be the last. And you can expect anything new from Marvel dealing with Star Wars to arrive around 2015.

Interesting year for that to happen...

We all saw that one coming, especially after they pulled the Disney licenses off BOOM! a while ago.

Those dates seem a bit odd though. Dark Horse's licence runs out in 2013 but no Marvel books until 2015. What happened to 2014?

The article says because that is when they are trying to get episode vii in the theaters, I wonder if it is that way so they see how dark horse ends their universe so Marvel writers will know what to do next? not in terms of continuing where they left off, but if a character is killed or something not that they retcon the work Dark Horse did.

Well, I don't think they'll retcon anything. If they keep going like the star Wars expanded Universe always has, that all officially licensed stuff is in continuity (with maybe one or two exceptions, like the Visionaries series and maybe some of the really old comics), then Dark Horse's stuff isn't a different universe, and all their story stuff will stand, they just won't be making anything new, Marvel will.

the license to create new content. apparently after the date, they are allowed to finish up whatever they pitched. hence the time between when the license is over and when marvel takes over.

hope dark horse will be able to survive w/o them.

there's going to be a sequel to Star Wars: Legacy, titled, wait for it...Star Wars: Legacy, staring the great-great granddaughter of Han and Leia, assuming the series will be as successful as its predecessor,do you it will be canceled by 2014 or will it make the jump by simply exchanging its Dark Horse logo for the Marvel one ?

This is something I'm also interested to know the answer to.
I am a big SW Legacy fan and had just heard that some new Legacy era content was coming down the pipeline - only to have news that Dark Horse is losing the license to break.

When I first read this line I had visions of Luke and Spidey teaming up , and then even worse Jar Jar and Deadpool.

Bit of a drag Dark Horse losing the license, I liked a lot of their stuff.
I wonder if Marvel will also pick up some of the creative teams from Dark Horse and keep on going where they left off

As far as creative teams go, if any creators were to transfer across they'd have to sign on to Marvel's work for hire terms rather than Dark Horse's. I know it's rare for people to turn down paying work nowadays but that might be a factor.

One thing I think it's safe to expect though is a ton of SW trades around the time of the changeover. Either DH getting a last run of collected edition on the shelves while they still can or Marvel following their usual "reprint everything possible regardless of there being any actual demand for it" business plan.

So would Marvel end up having the rights to everything Star Wars that Dark Horse has published to date ?

Yep, it's a licensed product so everything is tied to the license. Don't forget that Dark Horse have reprinted all the original Marvel Star Wars comics and are currently working their way through reprinting all the Marvel Conan commics too.

Well that's not good, I was just getting in to a few of these series. They're pretty much the only DH books I've been interested so far.

oh man, this is upsetting. dont get me wrong, i love marvel, but dark horse has done great with star wars. i have like everything they've put out. i thoutght disney would do right with star wars, because they seemed to do all right with the marvel stuff they were doing, but right out of the gate almost, they shut down lucasarts game studios. whats gonna happen with the new legacy comics? whats gonna happen with the one just named star wars thats on number 3 now? gettin tired of you disney!
