Dark Horse did so much more with SW than Marvel did the first go around, but I think we will see Marvel do the franchise right this time.

Dark Horse series are getting reprinted by Marvel, in a rather strange way.

StarWars.com wrote:
Marvel Entertainment announced today the release of an oversized dose of a galaxy far, far, away — Star Wars comics are coming to Marvel’s prestigious Epic Collection format — Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The Empire Vol. 1 TPB.

Let the dark times begin! Marvel welcomes Star Wars to the Epic Collection program, with this first volume of a series focusing on the years that follow Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith! After the end of the Clone Wars, the Republic has fallen and Palpatine exerts his ruthless grip on his new Galactic Empire. Now, the few Jedi that remain must decide whether to hold true to their faith, or abandon it completely in the face of a brutal purge — one carried out by the new Dark Lord of the Sith. Rise, Darth Vader!

“We’re thrilled to be bringing our innovative Epic Collections to a galaxy far, far away,” says Marvel SVP sales & marketing David Gabriel. “We’ll be bouncing around to different periods of Star Wars history with each Epic Collection, constructing one huge tapestry, collecting full unbroken runs of all the greatest Star Wars comics from the past 35 years.”

Star Wars Legends Epic Collection: The Empire Vol. 1 TPB will offer a new way for fans to collect and read iconic Star Wars stories across the past 35 years of published titles. These oversized, self-contained color collections will bring the adventures of the Rebellion, the Galactic Empire and more to the masses with exciting new Epic Collections.

COLLECTING: STAR WARS: REPUBLIC 78-80, STAR WARS: PURGE 1, STAR WARS: PURGE — SECONDS TO DIE 1, STAR WARS: PURGE — THE HIDDEN BLADE 1, STAR WARS: PURGE — THE TYRANT’S FIST 1-2, STAR WARS: DARTH VADER AND THE LOST COMMAND 1-5, STAR WARS: DARK TIMES 1-5

AUTHOR: JOHN OSTRANDER, RANDY STRADLEY, HADEN BLACKMAN, ALEXANDER FREED

ARTIST: LUKE ROSS , DOUGLAS WHEATLEY, JIM HALL, CHRIS SCALF, MARCO CASTIELLO, ANDREA CHELLA, RICK LEONARDI

DH had a lot more SW Universe to play with, though. And what kind of restrictions was Marvel working under at the time??

You mean when Marvel first had the licence? They had a complete blank slate, they were the original company to do the comics. iirc as long as Lucas signed off on it they could do whatever they wanted.

I've always wondered, is there a certain chronology, where to start with the dark horse star wars comics? I've always been eager to read these, but have been a bit overwhelmed with the sheer mass of content.

I've always used this one for the chronology for all the Star Wars comics to date.

Code:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Star_Wars_comic_books

The new books won't fit into that as Marvel are apparently doing away with the existing Extended Universe and starting again from scratch.

Not sure I believe this one but with 13 "regular" variants, shop specific variant incentives and a likely Loot Crate bulk purchase I guess anything's possible.

ComicBook.com wrote:
ComicBook.com has learned that Marvel Comics' upcoming Star Wars #1 will sell over a million copies, becoming the top-selling single-issue comic book of the last twenty years.

Star Wars, will also become the first-ever million-selling periodical comic book sold exclusively through direct market channels without the aid of newsstands.

I for one like to view the canon as being more or less the same as before: only now the timeline splits into 2 after Return of the Jedi, allowing the Canon EU to co-exists alongside the Legends EU

All the new Marvel books are taking place between Star Wars & Empire Strikes Back so would that still work for you?

Short response: good enough for me :D

Long response:
Spoiler: show
Star Wars books by Dark Horse are just as canon as Marvel's, contradictory accounts are of course retconed by newer materiel.

UNLESS the events take place after Return of the Jedi

Episodes VII-IX take place in the same time period as the Legacy era novels (three decades after Return) in this case the Legacy era events happen in another universe
