Neat how all 300 are well above the six thousand sold mark. And if you add the standard edition with the 3-D edition the Joker issue outsold everything else this month.

Hmm, never clicked on to that one. The #300 on this list is really only the #248 from a regular month as each DC book appears twice. Will post an update of #301-352 when I get home from work.

Yeah, all the extra titles means some that usually sit in the 300 are absent. But I'm sure they sold close to usual numbers. I know I collected my usual last month in addition to some of the villain one-shots.

Knights of the Dinner Table? I remember that comic. I read it years and years ago.

I can admit I was wrong about how Villains Month would fail DC...
even if their market share for September has to do with a two-fold gimmick (special covers & multiple titles running 2 to 3 times more than usual,) inflated cover prices (yet again,) and some truly deceptive and despicable tactics they pulled with comic shop owners... some of whom ARE NOT selling what they expected of these books that they pre-ordered based on the hype they were sold during the small window they had to order BEFORE "Villains Month" was revealed publicly (that last point is according to the owner at my personal comic shop, who is truly unhappy with DC right now. To be absolutely fair, I don't really know how true that is nation-wide. The first two points stand solidly enough on their own regardless.)

I'm not going to do the all the math this time around (no time to spare on it really...) but I'm pretty certain if you cut back any title that was normally a dollar less, it would be a significant difference in share, though it still might have them marginally higher than Marvel's share this month simply for the bonus runs of titles that are normally only monthly.

But yeah... for the first time this year they took the lead in market share, 45% to Marvel's 30% (rounded). (Not just the lead for the month, but the highest monthly market share of the year by 2-4 percent.)
Can't deny it happened, nor can I deny the strategy as anything other than successful for them. But it's not a strategy they can maintain and I foresee them taking a sizable loss next month for it and not really picking up all that many new readers for all the effort.
Short term gain.
But long term?
We'll see.

Obviously can't speak as to your LCS guy's exact circumstances but it sounds like he's spinning you a line there. The villians month books were solicited through Previews and ordered from Diamond just like a normal month would be. I'd have to go back and check but I can't remember there being any major creative team changes between solicitation & print either.

If he's meaning the allocations & filling orders with regular covers then that only came to light after the initial orders had been submitted. That one was a big screw-up and all down to the way DC chose to print the 3D covers so far in advance. Although who in their right mind would have guessed the orders would be that high for the books.

His contention was essentially that there was a significant mislead and pre-orders were being hyped with limited information and a pitch of "trust us, it'll be worth it." There is doubtless more detail to it than that, but his displeasure isn't "a line" he's "spinning" me.
As I implied previously, how much that translates to the overall result on a national level based on his account, I can not fairly guess. But it doesn't invalidate my points previous to that one regarding how DC achieved its share for September.
IMO this "gain" for DC has come as a bit of a "loss" for readers. (see my aside below.)

But I agree... who in their right mind would find demand high for these books?
Outside of the fact that any number of the villains featured are from titles they CANCELLED for low sales, they used a similar tactic last September with Zero Month and while that gained ranking position in market share for them momentarily, very few of the stories run that month had much impact on the stories they interrupted, and in a lot of cases were not satisfying and did not live up to the expectations of them. (Is anyone else still wondering about Batgirl's mystery cure that #0 was expected to address and didn't?)

{Aside - This is pretty much the nail in the coffin for the last remaining title I am collecting from DC. I still have not read the Trigon/Titan book, but I skimmed through the Deathstroke one... and as there has been NO reason to associate Slade to this version of the Titans... and there is NO valid or believable story connecting him to them in this book, it's likely issue 24 will be my last. (Though I'm surprised it's not up for cancellation at this point anyway given its low sales.) They committed to an entirely new take on the Titans, erasing all its history, put Deathstroke on the cover as if he were a "Titans Villain" when they've had no interaction whatsoever in the new 52, and expect loyalty for yet another dishonest tactic to get long time fans of the previous incarnation to read the new.
I gave it a fair chance... but it's long past disappointing me. Two years is more than enough time for them to get it together.}

I agree that Teen Titans has been a big disappointment, but it still sells over 30k, so I wouldn't expect them to cancel it any time soon.

Yeah... it's about to sell at least one issue less.

Fair do, just not sure where he's coming from. My LCS had printed checklists for all customers who were interested in the books so they could tick off which they wanted and add them to a pull list. Plus he had a copy of Previews at hand with all the solicitations in for anyone who wanted to check what the books were about. That was for about a fortnight before he had to put his order in with Diamond which is why I'm not getting your guy's reaction.

Yeah... it's about to sell at least one issue less.

According to CBR, #30 will be the last issue of the current series.

I'm not sure that's accurate. Solicitations released Tuesday make no indication of "Final Issue" even if they do mention the return of Bunker, Beast Boy, and (in Annual #3, TBR a week after TT#30) Skitter. Story seems to center on a final fight with Harvest...
Still wouldn't be surprised, and it's no bigger loss than I've already felt about the book, but maybe CBR misquote something?
