This book, Batman: Blind Justice, was a cool find at a recent convention. It was made in 1989 and even though it looks very 80s it was well drawn and written. Denys Cowan was the illustrator and did a pretty good job. He managed to make the Bonecrusher look not only menacingly big but ponderously clumsy at the same time.
Sam Hamm was the writer and has a really interesting introduction about how he went from screenwriting (he wrote the screenplay for the Tim Burton Batman movie) to comic book writing. And although his interpretation of Batman seems to have changed since '89 he did introduce (or reintroduce) some core qualities that were expanded upon in the movie Batman Begins. Such as, going to the Far East to train in martial arts and then apprenticing to Paris detective genius Henri Ducard. And that this is the 50th Anniversary adventure for the Caped Crusader.
The adventure itself is typical of the better Batman stories. A mysterious death, a call for help by Commissioner Gordon to solve the mystery, a masked villain. And with an interesting twist of Bruce Wayne having to go to trial and defend his innocence in a scandal involving WayneTech scientists experimenting on homeless people and selling the technology to foreign dictators.
All in all I'd give it 4 stars. Check it out.
There seems to be a newer version out with a listed price of $15. It must have a better cover and paper quality. The copy I found was cover priced at $8 (I paid $4 at the convention) and was lower quality 'newspaper' print pages with a very softcover. If you're looking for the collectible, longer lasting, version the $15 would be the one to go for. If you're just looking for a good, economic read that will last reasonably long given proper comic care get the older copy.
