Tales of the Realm seems to be a short run series by Image. It is set in today's time with magic running things instead of technology. And along with magic there is the other requisite fantasy standards. The trolls, dragons (as jets), crystal balls (as answering machines), and of course bandits on the highway. It's kind of like 'what if D&D was real in today's world'.

The story is set on some TV actors (TV sets are magical mirrors) who hear about a movie producer being captured for ransom and try to rescue him to break into movies. The idea being the producer would be so happy after being rescued that he will offer them a part. However, the main characters are not as big heroes in 'real life' as they are on TV. Also, the leader of the bandits is an evil wizard (natch) with plans far beyond simple ransom. It is safe to say the fate of the world rests in our outclassed protagonists.

While Matt Tyree's art was nice enough, the story by Robert Kirkman came as nothing I didn't already expect. In other words, it was good enough. There was a lot I felt that the setting offered that wasn't explored in the book. Perhaps the series took off and these areas were covered in later issues, I'm just not familiar with it. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is a big fan of magic, fantasy, or Dungeons&Dragons. Without an interest in that setting's genre there is little more the book can offer.

If you are going to buy it, it is cover priced at $15 and is worth it. nice, slick pages (144) with eye-popping colors.
