I just read Uncanny x-men 31.. and was very annoyed!
I won't go into the story (which has annoying aspects for sure) just the cover. The scene on the cover, or anything similar to it in anyway, are not related to the story in any way shape or form. It has NOTHING to do with it..
I know covers don't connect to stories that much nowadays, half are just a pinup image of the heroes or whatever, but this is a new low..

It's the way of things now, and has been for a while. Far too many covers look like poster/promo pieces that have been lying around and somebody decided to stick them on the front of a book.

And don't get me started on "theme month" variants...

I'm involved in a project where we reimagine covers for older books. There were rules in the old days that you followed.

*The cover is used to sell the book and should contain some element of the story.

*The cover (in almost all cases should show the hero)

*The better covers don't need words

Follow this and you can't go wrong. I agree that they have strayed from the path with these and need to get back to basics.

I hear you mate, It's been years of 'anything goes' to ensure the cover grabs the attention of a potential buyer...

What frustrates me even more, is that the cover art is to often a brazen misrepresentation of the interior art , which specially in case of Marvel books of late, like the jagged, untamed scribbles of a 5-year-old unleashed upon a box of Crayolas, or the inane strokes of a meth addict caught in the grasp of a pre-overdose epileptic fit.

We all know the names of the cut-price 'artists' who Marvel unleashed on their otherwise enjoyable storylines.
