What are the names of some comics or graphic novels about samurai or from that era of time when samurais existed? I am not really looking for manga series because I couldn't easily find what I am looking for in manga I just seem to be having trouble googling the right way to search for samurai comic books or graphic novels. so what are some good ones?

Usagi Yojimbo is the only one I can think of, I'm sure there's more though.

You could try giving these a look:

Ronin Hood of the 47 Samurai (graphic novel)
Soul of a Samurai (4 issue mini-series)
Samurai: Heaven and Earth (5 issue mini-series)
Samurai's Blood (6 issue mini-series)

And I know you said no manga but these are worth tracking down and have been reprinted recently iirc.

Samurai Executioner (Dark Horse)
Lone Wolf and Cub (Dark Horse)
The Legend of Kamui (Viz Comics)

Pretty much, it's a continuing story with same characters & creative team.

Katana (DC) looked like a samurai story when I flipped through it at the LCS.
Also, +1 for Usagi Yojimbo and Lone Wolf And Cub.

Have you seen Yojimbo the movie? Or The Seven Samurai?

Yes to all of the above, especially Samurai executioner and Lone Wolf and Cub. But here are two more great comic. One classic and one rather new.

Lady Snowblood.

Okko - The Cycle of Water/Earth/Air

Actually, there are 6 movies with the "Lone Wolf and Cub" name. These are the original Japanese ones.

Then there are the 5 labeled under "Shogun Assassin" that were the imports.
