Here to discuss Nature vs. Nuture.

do you believe people are born talented, successful, etc... or do our environments affect our upbringing and how we develop....or a combination of either.

Combo - seen all sorts of combinations of good/bad nature/nuture over the years so it must be a mix of everything that results in the finished article.

I could lock it,but then I'd be going against my own principals.

Nurture is more important than Nature,Nurture causes you to evolve both as a human and as a person, but Nature is forever static.

And before you became human? Did nurture drag you out of the primordial slime so that you evolved from 1-cell germ into a 2-cell bug?

we're debating about the social Nature vs. Nurture,NOT the biological.

ahh, ok.
Well, I'd have to say it's both.
Because before birth has a lot to do with how you turn out - ie. the physical/mental because of genes, or (eg) some poor baby born deaf and blind or with half a brain, etc. Nature is having its say.
Then the nurture kicks in after birth too. On 3rd season of "Fringe", Walter says something like: "Nature doesn't know good and evil... it just knows balance and imbalance". So, I think what we learn (in all senses of that idea) and how we are supported by others goes a long way to building the person we become. Plenty of brilliant people die young in gunfights because they follow in dad's footsteps. With different nurture they could have been successful. Numerous examples of failures because of the environment they were born into; we learn from other people, we have our role models.
So, where nature has been kind and the nurture has been positive/supportive, the outcome cab be great.
With other permutations, less so (but sometimes).
Probability.

I remember a poem from school days - "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard" by Thomas Gray - where the poet walked among the graves of poor peasants (too many died young because of the hard life) in some village and wondered if this guy could have been another Shakespeare... or that guy another Lord Nelson ... if only he'd had the chance.
But they had no opportunity.
And they never succeeded. Just like their parents.

Maybe the best result comes from Walter's "balance" ... but the balance between nature and nurture.
:)

Lack of talent does let you work harder, overcome the obstacle. Teaches you more about yourself and how to be successful even when the ods are not in your favor.

What talented bitch can say that from himself?

I'd say nurture was a huge part of it. However there are some cases - exceptions to the rule - where nature is a factor. This is mainly for cases such as psychopaths etc who are born with a mental predisposition to be bad. :harley:

You go through things to make you who you are. Can anyone actually say they are the same person from the time we are born. Throughout our life, we go through different circumstances and situations. The way we deal with those things is what shapes us into the person we become.
