Can anyone recommend a good 'jumping in' point for Iron Man? Preferably no more than 2/3 collections worth of catching up.

I found The Invincible Ironman #1 to be perfectly fine,

only 3 things to ever really to know about Tony Stark,

Hes smart.
Hes got an energy reactor in his chest.
He likes vagina.

Ric33r,

Maybe I'm being a little slow here, but isn't Invincible Iron Man up to #500+ ?

I'm after a convenient jumping in point, not expecting my 8 year old kid to read 500 comics.

Invincible Iron Man started July 08, and reverted to #500 after issue 33.

You could also jump on at 500.1 . Marvel created these Point One issues to be a reasonable jump on point for new readers, they're basically summary issues.

Can't blame that one on the Mandarin, sales have been going downhill for quite a long time now.

Here's a sales chart for IM since it's last relaunch. The three big spikes along the way were for #20 (Disassembled part 1), #25 (1st Heroic Age issue) and #500 (anniversary renumbering).

Image

As for why it's going down, probably a combination of stagnation (same creative team for 4+ years and not everyone likes the team), event fatigue (IM is one of the Avengers so he's at the centre of everything) and impenetrability (Fraction has apperently been telling an overall arc since he started), along with the usual decompression complaint that get's levelled at a lot of Marvel "Architect" books.

currently Iron Man has been very slow to tell its story. the arcs dont feel like they conclude anything. also there is very littl eof the Iron Man Armor in it, mostly just Stark and friends.

Surely fortune favors you, and the men I spared. Enjoy it.
But before you wash your hands of my father's blood, I would encourage you to reflect on what brought us to this point:
You sacrificed honor for expediency. You traded intent for quick action. You were wrong . . and we all suffered for it.
So do better now mortal man . . for if not I, then surely some god somewhere will someday find you wanting.
It would be a shame to wager your good fortune with folly.

Jeepers.. Did u even read the thread? :) Ric33r suggested just 5-6 posts above you that Invincible Iron Man #1 would be a good place to start... It ran for issues #1-33 then jumped to #500 for its milestone and continued from there... :) It has its ups and downs.. If you're wanting to read the supposed source for IM 3, then pick up Extremis..
