This one is picking up steam pretty quick on the casting front. Looks like most (all?) of the main characters are in place.

Detective James Gordon - Ben McKenzie
Harvey Bullock - Donal Logue
Captain Essen - Zabryna Guevara
Barbara Kean - Erin Richards
Alfred Pennyworth - Sean Pertwee
Oswald Cobblepot/The Penguin - Robin Lord Taylor

I don't think much of the concept of this series... but I have to admit being more than a little impressed with the casting of Donal Logue as Bullock. That's a truly, perhaps singular, inspired choice that seems at once in-obvious but also makes perfect sense.

No Catwoman or Bruce Wayne...

Quote:
Fox president Kevin Reilly spoke at the Television Critics Association winter tour about Gotham, revealing the series would be telling the origin stories of Batman’s classic villains. TVLine reported he even made a snarky comment about how other superhero shows dance around the use of the popular monikers of the heroes and villains, suggesting Gotham won’t be so subtle. Such villains as the Penguin, the Riddler and Catwoman will all see their stories told.

It's scheduled for later this year, August/September I think.

How did Fox get the rights to use DC characters?

They didn't. It's a WB production just being shown on Fox.

I like the idea of a show detailing Gordon's early years in the GCPD but I'm curious to see how Alfred really fits into the series. I would think they would try and take the spotlight away from the Wayne family entirely and really make Gordon the focus

Gotta admit, I was dubious how it would do with Gordon as the focus, but this trailer got me pumped. It seems they're going the Gotham Central route, which is a great idea.

I'm surprised they have the Wayne's getting killed so early - it was something they should have built to. Maybe have it as the season finale, let Gordon get on his feet in Gotham before they introduce that element. They could have shown us Bruce happy at home, so we really feel for him when he loses his parents - given us a Bruce more like the New52, who sneaks out of school and all that junk.

Regardless of what they should have done, I hope what they WILL do is focus on the villains a little. Give us some reason to root for Riddler and Penguin, rather than just have them as a villain. For example, Blacklist features James Spader as a criminal, working with the FBI, who has done some very shady things. Some of them have been on-camera, to prove to the audience he's not just all bluster. However, you root for him - so it can be done and done well.

So I was originally dubious, but I think I may have just taken a sip of the Gotham kool aid. I like what I see and looking forward to the first episode.

I dunno, feels too much like a prequel to Nolan's TDK Trilogy, and I hate Nolan's TDK Trilogy

any idea why it's going to be broadcasted on a Fox-owned channel rather than a WB-owned channel ?

Well they couldn't have had it on CW, otherwise everyone would expect an Arrow crossover. Which would have been a terrible idea.

I'm sure FOX get to pay a nice little fee for the privilege of showing it.

Hmmmm. Not sure after looking at the trailer. Been re-reading Gotham Central recently - that was v.good/interesting whereas this looks potentially bog standard: Central character, a rugged, good looking man with a past, learning he needs to (and how to) bend the rules to bring justice to the streets of Gotham, in between shouting matches with his captain. Ya da ya da ya da

Just look track record Fox has when it come this group of characters. I would give the a pass for the Batman movies of the mid 90's, cause Batman the animated series and the spinoffs from it were so awesome so I thank the cast and crew of all of those shows. I have hope that this show will be good.
