Isn't that BW standing next to the bike in the 3rd panel?

It looks like her. I've never been a fan of winter soldier (I thought he was an ok Captain america, but nothing special) so I won't be reading this. It does seem weird to kill him off then immediately say he's not dead, but I din't really care about his death, either.

Looks like Nat is definitely going to be a part of the series:

I have no problems with a Winter Soldier series at all, but I think this whole death swap deal should have been handled in Captain America rather then a event, that really didn't mean much to Captain America as it does to Thor's mythos. Instead we get a large gap from Gulag to fear itself, then for the first 3 issues of Captain America vol. 6 nothing is mentioned.

Damn good eye ya got there dude. I kinda glossed over it as I was thinking about the Secret Avengers/FI tie-in when Natasha is preaching about loss, and (ironically) the website guys are saying "what's the big deal, he'll comeback to life in a couple months time!"

Well, Brubaker writes him good, so Im happy about that, and I guess they wanted to find a way to make steve captain again so he had to "die"..
I guess its a good thing the death was handled so poorly in "fear itself", cause now I almost don't mind it being revoked so quickly at all :)

Thinking about it we can't really call it Marvel bringing someone back from the dead, more faking a death as a means to an end. I suppose I can let them off this time. Still waiting for Johnny Storm to come back as a brainwashed tool of Annihilus.

Well he wasn't dead but the whole upgrade to the big guy's identity then get put back down is a pretty similar outcome (was always going to happen for both of them). The Cap/Bucky situation was very badly handled though.

No, apparently is was all planned out about a year in advance. Don't know if I should be scared by that or not...

You could say it's "Fear Itself". :goblin:

I get the whole seeing the understudy/sidekick one day taking the reins from the more popular character, but make it permanent or something simple like a broken back.

So there was this event called Fear Itself, right? And in one of the issues a popular character died a fairly limp and meaningless death, right?

Well guess what...

That whole "I must seem dead to the world so I can work in secret" set up screams at me like it's the idea behind a 70s/80s TV show but I can't put my finger on it. Anyone?

Perhaps Knight Rider?

'Self-made billionaire Wilton Knight rescues police detective Michael Long after a near fatal shot to the face, giving him a new identity (via plastic surgery) and a new name: Michael Knight. Wilton selects Michael to be the primary field agent in the pilot program of his Knight Industries-funded public justice organization, the Foundation for Law and Government (FLAG). The other half of this pilot program is the Knight Industries Two Thousand (KITT), a heavily modified Pontiac Trans Am with numerous features including an extremely durable shell and frame, controlled by a computer with artificial intelligence.'

TV's The Incredible Hulk also had a similar plot.

"McGee witnesses the Hulk carrying the girl away, and surmises that the Hulk started the fire and killed both Banner and Marks. Although the authorities are skeptical of the existence of the creature McGee tells them about, he reports the creature to the police and publishes a front-page headline in the National Register that proclaims, "Incredible 'Hulk' Kills 2" before vowing to track down the creature so he can catch it and bring it to the law's attention. It is at this point the series begins—McGee vows to capture Marks's and Banner's killer. Banner, now presumed dead, is forced to go into hiding while trying to find a cure for his condition. Banner endlessly drifts from place to place, assuming different identities and odd jobs to support himself and sometimes to enable his research. Along the way, Banner finds himself feeling obliged to help the people he meets out of whatever troubles have befallen them."

8) heh. the 80s...
