I'm new to this whole comic book thing and just wanted to say thanks for all the suggestions. I'm finding myself a bit lost when it comes the "normal" stuff, but the GN are nice to just pick up and read from start to end without having to think about issue numbers etc.

Did no one nominate Crisis On Infinite Earths? So many moments key to the DCU took place in that, though they have actually retconned most of them now!

I'd also like to say:
Kingdom Come (Alex Ross' artwork is always awesome, and this has it cover to cover...and a great story too)
Watchmen
Killing Joke
Death In The Family (think I may read this again tonight!)
Arkham Asylum
Terminal Velocity :flash: (not a classic but I personally enjoyed it, and do recommend it!)

Universe X (even without reading Planet X, I very much enjoyed this and the take on all the characters)
X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills - Ground breaking stuff, and (very)loose inspiration for X2 :nightcrawler:
Excalibur special edition Vol1 - Just because it includes 3 of my favourite charcters, and launched what I thought was a very original series for the first 30 or so issues (Alan Davis another awesome artist!)

This thread seems to be slowing down, which is too bad because I think you guys have covered a lot of the best books out there, making it a good resource for people looking for the next title to add to their library. If it's not too late, here are a few of my favourites that I didn't spot on anyone's list...

Keeping myself to just 5, and in no particular order:

The Adventures of Luther Arkwright, by Brian Talbot -- amazing stuff! Anything by Talbot is worth reading
Mouse Guard, by David Petersen -- not your average talking mouse funnybook
Stray Bullets, by David Lapham -- currently out of print, but worth the extra work to track down
The Maxx, by Sam Kieth -- some of you might remember the MTV animated series from the 90s which adapts about 1/2 the comic run... really strong series, now in print as 6 GNs from DC/Wildstorm
ElfQuest, by Wendy & Richard Pini -- the title that set the standard for me, all available to read for free on the Elfquest.com website

Year One/ Dark Knight Returns (I can count them together if they are in the same universe right? To cheat even more, just generalise it into Frank Miller [BUT ONLY IN THE EIGHTIES!])

Batman: Hush- This book is absolutely sublime, the art is fantastic and the story itself shows every main character that has ever been in the Bat-Universe, I just love this so much more that Long Halloween and Dark Victory.

Anything written by Grant Morrison- (Ideally, Batman & Son- Batman, Inc. All-Star Superman and Animal Man) This man has got to be the greatest comic book author around.

Kingdom Come- I loved reading this, the writing is great and the art was so different to anything I had seen previoulsy, every panel looks like a portrait.

Crisis Trilogy/Crisis On Infinite Earths- I know DC didn't really popularise the Mega-Event formula, but Crisis On Infinite Earths was the only one that genuinely had an affect on the books afterwards, it completely changed comics and everything was restarted. But I have to say I love reading this with Infinite Crisis and Final Crisis.

1. From Hell - Pretty surprised this hasn't been listed much.

There are the usuals, indeed, like Watchmen and Dark Knight Returns. I'd throw in Maus, too, but this seems to be a pretty superhero-oriented forum? (I just arrived, please forgive me.)

I'd like to mention the Elektra: Assassin book Miller did with Bill Sienkiwicz (sp???). The art is incredible. And also a slim graphic novel they did of Daredevil. The story in that one isn't great, but it has its compelling moments.
