Good choice.

Don't mind Stiff - he doesn't always get his recommendations right (just like me before he mentions it :) )

What? I'm just saying...Watchmen may *not* be everyone's cup of teaImage...and for the life of me...I dunno why *everyone* seems to keep mentioning it...check that...and going "ga-ga" over it... Image
It's B  R I N G to me and much COMplICated for a comic for my tastes...and I've tried re-reading it several times already...just to figure out what makes it "Essential"...and I think I know now why...
But hey batsy, if you're gonna read it...dont anyone stop you...and please let us know your *real* thoughts...and try not to flavor it with what *everyone* else seems to think about it...

I'm about half way through Watchmen, but I'm not impressed. I haven't read any of it in about three days. It's boring to me. I do plan to finish it just so I can say that I have, but It's kind of became a chore to read it.

:O Jumpin Jupiter Batman! You didn't *like* it too?!?? Well, we're in a minority here

Well, good luck finishing it! Speaking of finishing....here's something I would want to add as an "Essential" :

Ultimate Galactus Trilogy (comprised of Nightmare, Secret and Extinction) by Warren Ellis (although I could have sworn I thought it began with Bendis and sprinkled with Millar...)...it's so darn good..that unlike Watchmen...I am taking my sweet sweet time finishing it...

I have surrendered to Watchmen

I couldn't finish it. I had borrowed the graphic novel from the library, and I returned it a few days ago. I just couldn't get through it. :(

Maybe I'll finish it someday, but I doubt it.

I'm still busy building my top five, but so far Marvel Zombies is a winner and the Dark Avengers is looking really good.
* On a side note anything involving the Symbiotes and Venom / Carnage is great :venom: ;)

Little off topic but not sure if I am missing something, but I cant seem to view the links that people posted on some of the comics i get:

You should have read this thread first --> you-must-have-5-posts-to-view-the-downloads-t256.html

Doesn't matter now though, you've made your 5 posts so you have access to them all now!

Ok, I'm slightly gonna modify my answers to this thread...if I define "essential" as something really necessary to read 1st to appreciate not only continuity or ongoing story lines (otherwise this would be full of DC comics) but also getting to know and appreciate the characters more (especially the not so popular ones)...then I have to add the following five (in no particular order):

The Authority the Warren Ellis and Mark Millar runs (just to get to know the characters) on Wildstorm
Walking Dead by Robert Kirkman (both for continuity and characters) on Image
Strange Killings, Stranger Kisses, Body Orchard etc by Warren Ellis (if you want to get some character background on Frank Gravel series) on Avatar
The Boys by Garth Ennis (basically for characters)
and rounding off the 5, is Brian K Vaughan's Ex-Machina (much like WD, both for continuity and characters)

And, on a class on its own, and I swear I keep repeating myself, an always essential read is anything "Ultimate" whether for character or continuity... it's consistently a great read, regardless of who is writing it.

The new Joker by Brain & Lee Berjemo is some pretty strong stuff. The Killing Joke is an automatic given as well.

Watchmen seems to me to be an aquired taste but I enjoyed it and saw what they were trying to get across in the book. I liked it but I know it's not for everyone.

And even though they're not really "Graphic Novels", I'd have to say the collected editions of The Walking Dead and the earlier Dark Horse Conan stuff are damn good reads!
