Ooh, so many.

Morbid Angel, Entombed, Atheist, Deicide (early stuff), Exhorder, Napalm Death (later stuff), Bolt Thrower, Cannibal Corpse, Dismember, Obituary, Pestilence

That should keep you going for a while.

Everything Spaced said and try these:
Amon Amarth, The Haunted, In Flames, Soilwork, Candlemass.

Of course, you MUST listen to Slayer.

I would have said Candlemass were more doom than death but yeah good band (Messiah's next band Memento Mori were even better though).

maybe Archenemy, some of their stuff is really cool. I would totally recommend Amon Amarth, as b0xt has already done so. That band is really good, it's like a combination of power metal with death metal.

This should be obvious Death, Cannibal Corpse and Cynic are maybe the best.

Are most death metal bands sing with a raspy voice that can sometimes sound like pig squeals?

Vocals can be anything really, although mostly growl/rasp type - no idea where you're getting pig squeals from :? . Main common factor with all death bands is very fast, heavy guitar riffs.

Sorry I meant growls and raspy voices but are you saying a person in a death metal band doesn't need to sing with a growl or raspy voice?

No, they can sing however they want. Like I said, only real thing that defines a death metal band is the high speed, heavy riffs.

I see but even though thats what defines them I haven't heard of a death metal band where the singer doesnt sing with a growl or raspy voice.

The original wave of death metal bands were all rasp/growl but as the genres have become more blurred you get more varied vocal styles (esp. power metal, black metal style) in bands that still get classed as death metal.

If you wanna hear Death Metal with pig squeals and toilet flushing like vocals you should listen to bands like Devourment, Disgorge, Despondency, Malignancy, Abysmal Torment or Mucupus just to name a few.

But this bands are also more considere as "brutal death metal" becouse of their intensity. Tell me what you think and if you like it i can name you tons more ;)

PIERCETAPES' TWENTY 'ESSENTIAL' RECOMENDATIONS
1) Obituary - The End Complete 2) Morbid Angel - Altars Of Madness 3) Incantation - Onward To Golgotha 3) Entombed - Left Hand Path 4) Deicide - Deicide 5) Morbid Angel - Covenant 6) Obituary - Cause Of Death 7) Cannibal Corpse - Eviseration Plague 8) Sarcofago - I.N.R.I. 9) Cannibal Corpse - The Bleeding 10) Sepultura - Morbid Visions 11) Death - Scream Bloody Gore 12) Possessed - Seven Churches 13) Death Breath - Stinking Up The Night 14) Hellhammer - Demon Entrails 15) Incantation - Decimate Christendom 16) Bathory - Bathory 17) Hypocrisy - Obsculum Obscenum 18) Death - Spiritual Healing 19) Repulsion - Horrified 20) Vital Remains - Dechristianize

Death metal is cool, but why limit yourself with this tag? There are other intense metal bands that wouldn't neccessarilly be termed death metal. Even on the above list, bands such as Possessed and Sepultura were on a larger level two of the best Thrash/Speed Metal bands ever. Venom's Welcome To Hell and Black Metal releases should be mandatory listening, but essentially it is Proto-Thrash more akin to Motorhead than anything else. All of this stuff rules. Current bands like Evile and Municipal Waste deserve a listen. Recently I've been listening to Doom - Total Doom, a crusty-sounding Hardcore-punk/Grind hybrid from the late eighties.
