gotta agree with the Bendis quote in the Newsarama article that says it's not who died but how. otherwise... ugh

Some remarkable Bendis quotes on this one:

Brian Bendis wrote:
"This is a death of biblical proportions for the X-Men universe. Not only because of who dies, but how they die."

~

“He was this thing that was just floating around the X-books, with not the same amount of gravitas that he once had.”

So it's an epic death... of a character that nobody cares about any more & just brought here to die?

Brian Bendis wrote:
“The moment is shocking, and certainly will be talked about by message boards forever and ever, but it’s really about what you get afterwards.”

Pretty much summed up the marketing policy of every Marvel event (specifically) and every other comic event in general there.

perhaps a little. I can't believe how Cyclops' character development has went over the past few years. . He was at a time 'the boy scout'. Then he pretty much became Magneto Jr.

Now that you mention it, he did sound kind of like SB Prime.

As for the death, I'm sure it won't last.

I'll agree you saw it coming. In fact, I thought it was so obvious throughout the book that it was a feint to make us THINK that person would die and a different person would.

Also... with

Spoiler: show
Scotty going DARK PHOENIX doesn't that mean he'll have to end up dead at some point? I seem to recall that's the whole reason Jean died (one of her deaths) was although they had vanquished the Dark Phoenix from her, there was always a piece of it within, and there always would be. Maybe I just remember wrong but that's what I thought.

I bet Marvel says we've seen seeds of this going back to Scott's death and when he was a Horseman of Apocolypse... that he was "darker" when he came back, that's when he stopped being the boy scout, etc....

There's also the piece of the Void that's locked away in Cyclops' mind after all the Dark Reign shenanigans.

"Wasn't me guys, honest. The Void did it!"

There is an innate problem with holding the P5 directly responsible for their actions...
a problem that resonates through this entire damn story.

It was assumed from its first appearance that the Phoenix was "inhabiting" Jean Grey.
Later, in the first run of X-factor (the one designed to reunite the first five X-men,) they ret-coned the fact that Jean was never possessed by the Phoenix, but was placed in a healing stasis while it assumed her form and duplicated her memories.
So...
If we understand that it was never "possession" to begin with, but the entire premise of this series is built on the idea they expect the Phoenix TO POSSESS Hope... (only to instead possess others,)
then WHY was that not brought up by any living X-Man who knew the ret-coned truth?
And yeah, sure, we can assume the Phoenix is powerful enough to do both; possess or duplicate a host. Either way, why has there been any consideration that Summers has had any kind of control?

Spoiler: show
Oh, and Emma Frost being "imprisoned" or whatever? Bogus as hell.

Sound questions but unfortunately in this case the Phoenix is just a partial macguffin which allows for a scenario to develop so that the Avengers and X-Men beat the crap out of each other for 12 issues.

Such is the state of mainstream event comics now I'm afraid.
